Common causes of dairy discomfort

Dairy sensitivity has several causes, each of which may produce similar symptoms. If you suspect that milk is messing with you, talk with your doctor to find out why.

1. Milk allergy

A milk allergy is when the immune system doesn’t recognize one or more proteins in dairy products. If you have been diagnosed with a milk allergy, you should eliminate all milk products from your diet entirely.

2. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

IBS is an intestinal disorder that causes abdominal discomfort, and symptoms like diarrhea and constipation. Although the cause is unknown, your doctor can help you with an accurate diagnosis. See a medical specialist if you think you may have IBS.

3. Lactose intolerance

Lactose is a sugar found in dairy products. Your body needs a natural enzyme called lactase to help you digest it. When you don’t have enough lactase, you might experience lactose intolerance symptoms like gas, bloating, or diarrhea after you eat milk, cheese, or ice cream.
